Pay Up Now Campaign

By
Sunday, September 3, 2017

UNISON’s major pay campaign “Pay Up Now” has started and we need all branches to get involved.

We’re fighting for all public sector workers to get the pay rise they need and deserve, so there won’t be any let up in the campaign until the pay cap is scrapped and proper pay rises return.  The cap on pay since 2010 has meant the average public sector worker has experienced a 18% real terms cut in their pay.

All of us in UNISON, need to work together to keep that pressure on until we get:

  • an end to the pay cap;
  • government money made available for an immediate pay rise for all public sector workers;
  • an end to government interference in bargaining arrangements for all public sector pay.

The Chancellor will deliver his Budget Statement in November and before then we need to make sure we have communicated directly with as many members as possible and build up pressure on the Tory MPs in the region.

We need all branches to write or email to all their members  so they are aware of the campaign and how they can get involved.  All our activists and all regional staff should use every opportunity to talk to members.

We are asking every branch to organise at least two events  in workplaces – many are choosing to do this on their payroll dates in September and October.  Some have already started – Thurrock Local Government had a very successful event last week.

Members need to be encouraged to email or write to their MP and let them know about the pay cap has affected them and their families.  We have a Tory minority government and MPs must have no doubt about the strength of feeling in their constituency.

These events are also great opportunities to talk to non-members and encourage them to join a trade union that is ready to campaign for them.

We are looking at working with other trade unions to hold high profile events in our two most marginal constituencies – Norwich and Thurrock.

There’ s a range of resources available for branches to use on UNISON’s campaign website: https://www.unison.org.uk/our-campaigns/pay-up-now/

Regional Organisers have been asked to speak to all branches and discuss what events you would like to arrange and the support you would like.  If they haven’t done so already – they will be in contact soon.

Please remember to take photos of any events  and share them with us!

Across the union, there’s so much planned for the weeks and months ahead, and we know after years of austerity and cuts this fight won’t be easy. But together, UNISON can win for all public sector workers and deliver that long-overdue pay rise.

Regional Secretary
